Dead Babies Crying?

I live in southeastern Alabama. This is a true story I've heard from my father, and others, many times. It happened when he was young. It probably happened, then, in the 1920's. To protect this family's privacy, I'll call them the Dalton's, a family of husband, wife and several children. Mrs. Dalton died, and Mr. Dalton took their oldest daughter and used her for a wife. Yes, exactly that, incest. Everyone in the community knew. The daughter had babies for her father, all died 'mysteriously' and buried in the back yard. After one baby was born, the father took it outside and came back alone. No doubt this is what he did with all of them. The father did not like for the daughter to be out of his sight, but she managed to get to visit out-of-town relatives who wanted to get her away from him. When this happened, the father knew he was in deep trouble, he went cried, hugged his two younger children, and killed himself. The daughter grew up, married, and had othe! r children. On her deathbed, she said she heard babies crying. For a long time, someone kept flowers where those babies were buried, in the yard. The present owners of this property may not know about it, but then again, they may. They've lived in this community for a lot of years, too.

Date: 12/19/1999 12:57:00 PM    At least the story had a happy ending for the girl. Otherwise, the story was just too creepy to read again.
Date: 1/12/2000 1:34:00 PM    Not brilliantly written. Not enough thought put into it.
Date: 1/28/2000 11:09:00 AM    This is an urban legend, and it has seen numerous retellings over the years. FYI: This same story circulates in Tennessee and Kentucky; I'm sure it has been heard elsewhere. See the W.W. Norton Anthology on urban legends "The vanishing Hitchhiker" for variations on this story. C.Phillips, PhD.

Date: 3/25/2002 6:06:00 AM  From Authorid: 7333    This is not an urban legend, it actually happened. My father and the others who told of this grew up in the community in which it happened. Perrianne
