In 1980, my friend and her husband decided to leave San Antonio around 10 PM one night en route to Lake Tahoe in their brand new Cadillac for a vacation. Since it was mid-July, 100 degrees plus and they had to cross a lot of country, they wanted to drive at night. I told them to be careful, take a lot of bottled water and call me when they arrived in El Paso or White Sands to let me know they were okay. I did not hear from her until they reached Tahoe and asked her why. She said as they reached the Davis Mountains {deep West Texas}, the Caddy 'took a dump' on the highway and they were, to say the least, livid and scared to death, what with rattlesnakes and other 'critters' running rampant. They were on the side of a highway, at 3:15 AM, her husband was in no way a mechanic and they were panic-stricken. Of course, they did not have a CB radio or any other method of communication. She described the night as well-lit by the full moon, deathly quiet and 'eery', with the only sounds being those of coyotes and, what she thought sounded like werewolves. {She has an enormous imagination even to this day.} Her husband said they would just have to walk to the next nearest town which, by his estimation, would be about 20-25 miles. {West Texas is full of miles and miles of nothing}. As they began to walk, she decided to turn around and send the Cadillac the 'bird of paradise' sign with her middle finger and, when she did, saw two men standing over the Cadillac with the hood raised. She told Cody to turn around and look, nearly 'wetting' herself, as she put it. He did and immediately began to run back to the car. He asked them what the hell they were doing and where they came from. The men both had 'albino-looking' hair, as she described them, wore white suits, shirts, ties and shoes {silk she thought} and had the most beautiful skin. She said their eyes were pale gold and their eyebrows and lashes were the same color as their hair. Neither man spoke a word to either of them but lowered the hood and jestured to them with open hands so as to say, go ahead, get in, your car is! fixed... They unlocked the doors, got in the car and it started. When they went to thank or pay the men, they were nowhere to be seen...after driving up and down the highway about 20 minutes, they were never found. Tongue in cheek, thinking she was making an excuse for not calling {as is her custom} me, I asked her what kind of car the men drove. She looked at me with a blank stare, silent and asked Cody to come over to where we were sitting. Cody, a man of extreme credibility and of good rapport in the community, also looked at her with a blank stare when she asked him. He said 'They didn't have a car, silly...remember?' We don't know who the men were; no one in the next town at the cafe knew of whom they spoke. Perhaps they really were angels. How it changed my life:Nothing surprises me any more.
