James 4:11-12 11 Do not speak evil against one another, brothers. [1] The one who speaks against a brother or judges his brother, speaks evil against the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge. 12 There is only one lawgiver and judge, he who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you to judge your neighbor?

In this case, the law is God, and the law is the Word. When you judge another person, or gossip, or backbite, or speak negetive words against someone else, you're speaking those words not only against the command from Jesus "do not judge", but also against a person who the law (God) created! The only being with the right to judge is God. Now, this is different from critiquing, giving opinions, trying to show someone where they may be mistaken. This is talking about hostility. Words lacking any kindness or good intent in them.
