This incident occurred in an old, old town in the east. My husband had been transferred there and it was very hard adjusting to the move as the people in this town were not friendly and did not welcome newcomers. They had lived there all their lives and everyone knew everyone else. My husband worked a lot of hours, mostly nights, so my three children and I were alone most of the time. The house was a two story home with a huge basement. One night, I was waiting on my niece to finish up her facial in the bathroom when all of a sudden, all the lights in the house went out. I just sat there a moment and was starting to get up when I heard a howling noise outside the window. My niece heard it too and she yelled my name. I went from my bedroom, across the hall to the bathroom where my niece was and we heard the howl from that window. We were both very scared and didn't know what to think because whomever or whatever was doing the howling appeared to know which room we were in. My children were sleeping and I didn't want them to wake up and get them frightened. I knew that I had to go downstairs to the basement and check the fuses. My niece got behind me and we felt our way to the top of the staircase and were getting ready to venture down when we heard the howl at that window. This time, for the first time in my life, I was so frightened my hair stood on end. I had always heard of that saying but had never experienced it. My husband had a old antique shotgun, no shells, but I got it and thought if someone saw it, they would never know it wasn't loaded. We went down the stairs slowly and by that time, our screaming had awakened the children so they went downstairs with us. I got down to the basement door and absolutely could not bring myself to unlock the door and check the fuses. We all ran back upstairs and all piled into my bed. The next morning, there were footprints around the house and the next door neighbor's screen door had been slashed with what looked like a knife. Our neighbor called the police but nothing ever came of it. I don't know what it was to this day. But it still scares me when I think of it. The howling was the most bloodcurdling noise I have ever heard. Nothing ever happened there again and several months later, my husband was transferred again. How it changed my life:It didn't change my life.
