A Peaceful Sleep

My mother was a beautiful woman and a talented artist. She lived in our home for nearly two years and spent most of her time drawing what she loved most, birds. Birds of all sizes and colors. Unfortunately, she became so ill that I finally resigned myself to the fact that I would no longer be able to take care of her and placed her in a nursing home. Her heart disease got progressively worse until the doctors told me that there was nothing they could do. Then, one afternoon in January, I received the dreaded call from the nurses. My mother was having a heart attack and they wanted me to come as quickly as possible to be by her side. Her suffering continued until the wee hours of the morning until finally, I could bear it no more. I began crying, begging a higher power to take her so she would be at peace. All of a sudden, I heard birds singing. So many birds it seemed to fill the room with the sound for several minutes. Puzzled, I glanced down at the small radio I had placed in her room earlier to help soothe her. I realized the sound was coming from the radio. Then I looked at my mother’s face and realized she was gone. For all the struggling and heartache we go through during our lifetime, I think our final moments are filled with peace.

How it changed my life:

It has helped me be at peace with my life.
