I got a call one night from my best friend. Her grandmother whom she lived with was out of town. And since it was a rainy and stormy night she wanted me to spend the night. She was always a little spooked to stay there alone at night. It was a week night and I wasn't keen in driving over there in the weather and I had to be at work early in the morning, but she was adamant. She lived in an old area of Los Angeles called Mount Washington. Her grandmothers house was built on a hillside so when you walked in off the street you were on the top floor of a two story. As her backyard was radically sloped they never used it. They had a deck instead that jutted out off the top level. On this deck was a small pug dog that barked at every sound. I arrived at about 8:00PM. We chewed the breeze till 10:00PM then decided to go to bed. We walked downstairs at the foot of the stairs faceing ahead of you was a window with the blind pulled down. To the right was a small bedroom with a couple of twin beds. We fell asleep immediately. Around 2 hrs later I awoke with a start. I was terrified my heart was pounding I was in sheer terror only I didn't know why. I laid there knowing that something terrible was going to happen. I was scard to move for two or 3 minutes and then I heard it. Luckily It was outside. And just on the other side of the wall. It was a sound that I've never heard before or since. It lasted for at least 15 seconds. The only thing I can describe it sounding like is a cross between a human moan and an animal growl but it was the volume that stunned me it sounded very large. Now if you've been around a zoo and heard a lion or tiger roar the volume is amazing. It was like that but evil and unearthly sounding. I was riveted to the bed. I waited and 2 or 3 minutes later it did it again. This time it had moved only about five feet as it was making its way around the outside corner of the bedroom wall. On the second moan I said to my self my friend has to hear this. Then I heard her whisper to me "What was that? in a terried voice. I said "I don't know, lets go upstairs". As we quietly got up we came to the foot of the stairs and paused for about 2 mintues huddled together. We were about 2 feet from the window with the blind pulled down. This time this hideous sound came again and this time it was facing that window. We bolted up the stairs in complete hysteria. We called everyone we knew at midnite on a weekday crying and begging someone to come. noone wanted to bother they told us it was probably a wet dog or something. We huddled on the upstairs couch all nite. Wondering why her dog never made a sound. The next morning I went outside in the backyard and looked around for foot prints in the mud and saw nothing but whatever it was was at least 5ft tall as that window was that high off that inclind slope. We heard the sound a total of 3 times that night. We did call the police but kept dialing the wrong # in our panic. We never thought about animal control because it didn't sound like an animal that we knew. How it changed my life: I can't say it changed my life but I'm 42 and have traveled the world and have never heard any human or animal make that sound.
