One day as I waited at the bus stop, I was approached by an old drunken gentleman. I was planning to catch the bus to downtown Seattle in order to go to the library to check out some books on the paranormal. The drunk came up to me reeking of alcohol. I definately expected him to ask me for some spare change, but to my surprise he reached into his pocket and fished out two one dollar bills and handed them to me. Astonished, I mumbled out a thank you, and the old drunk began to amble off. Suddenly he turned around and came back. Once again He dug into his pocket and this time handed me a one dollar bill. Now I had three dollars. Other than that I had perhaps a quarter for an emergency phone call, plus my round-trip tickets. The old man again turned away and this time dissapeared down the street.
Later at the library, having made my book selection, I went up to the check out counter. The librarian quikly informed me that I needed exactly three dollars to renew my library card. My mouth almost dropped open as I handed over the three dollars...with out which I would have gone home with out my books. I feel that somehow the old drunk, in his altered state of mind, had tapped into my up-coming need for exactly three dollars.
UP-DATE: It is about twenty years later now and just a few weeks ago I had the opportunity to repay my debt. I was sitting in my car taking a break from work, when an old beater pulled up beside me and a rather down on his luck gentleman climbed out and approached my open window. He told me that he needed a couple of dollars for gas so that he could make it home. I was in a generous and cheerful mood as I reached for my bill fold and with out thinking handed him exactly three dollars. He thanked me and drove off. It wasn't until later that it dawned on me that I had repaid my debt. How it changed my life:Generous acts should be payed back, and someday the opportunity will come. TC
