In February of 1982, my father sent me to Bermuda for a week to recover from a miscarriage I had just had the month before. With me, he sent my mother and 2 year old daughter. While there Jen, my young daughter, would always come running in for candies and cheesies and spend alot of time at the side of the cottage we were staying in Somerset. She would laugh and play and began talking louder and louder (we thought this was so cute as she was talking more and more). Soon we decided to ask her who she was talking to. She said she was talking to a boy. "Where is he?" we asked. "Ohhh Mommy, right there!!" she giggled. Only thing is, there was nobody there. That is the time you suddenly feel chills move up along your arm, creating little goose bumps. I let it pass and thought, that I had heard about children creating little invisible playmates, and that was what she had done. Each day should would play happily outside, at the corner of the cottage. I never did tell her that morning we were going to leave. Mom and I packed our stuff and were about to get Jen. She came running inside. "We're going home today", I said. Jokingly I asked if she wanted to say goodbye to her friend. She looked at me like any other child would look at their parent, as if I had said something stupid, and said " mommy, he said bye. He said I'm going home." With that, my mother and I looked at each other.. and both felt the chills up our arms...... How it changed my life:Made me think of what children can see that we dont, and that we should really listen to our children when they talk.
