I used to live in N.C. and have heard that this is true. From what I understand is that a long time ago they used to check the trains by lanterns and one of the men who checked, put his lantern down to look under the train and the other man didn't see the light and signal the enginer to go ahead causing the man under to be decapatated. He warns people to stay off the tracks. |

| Date: 2/18/2000 9:37:00 PM my mom and dad went to this the night before they got married. my mom chickened out and did not go, but my dad went and saw it. he said that it scared him really bad. he was wearing a watch and to this day the watch will stop at the exact time he saw the ghost i am planning om going as soon as i get some nerve i started to go once but got really scared |

The fact of the matter is, around the turn of the century, my great-grandfather, who worked for the railroads, was out drinking late into the night, and fell asleep on the tracks. He was decapitated by an oncoming train, and to this day, his ghost searches endlessly for his head. According to my grandmother, his daughter, his head was never found. The funeral service and laying out were both closed casket, so as not to upset the family. My grandmother was about 6 or 7 at the time, so this occured roughly around 1911 or 1912. After her father's death, my grandmother and all her siblings were sent to live at the Oxford Orphanage, until their mother remarried. I have seen this light as well and researched it for an American Folklore project. You cannot video it. I have tried. It showed in the viewer while filming, but once I got home there was nothing but our excited screams on the tape. There are many stories behind this ghost. The one I heard from locals is that he was murdered by an angry once best friend. Legend has it that he was knocked out and left left on the tracks to be run over by the train, covering all clues to the murderer. Because of the unknown nature of the accident, many people think that he was a drunkard that passed out on the tracks and was run over. It is suggested that he was dead long before the train came. I guess I would chase after people as well if this happened to me! It is definitely a spooky place! |
| Date: 7/4/2000 5:21:00 AM Myself and three other friends went to see it one night, the only difference is you use your headlights to call it, and boy did we call it. it appeared a little ways off the first time. We flashed again and it appeared a little closer and started changing colors. The third time it was right up on us. We took off and it followed right behind us for bout a mile gaining on us. It dissapeered when we reached the bridge. We had been four times including one freaky halloween night and three of four we saw it. |
| Date: 10/30/2000 8:48:00 PM i don't belive what you have said.i live near the place where the light is and you always see it at night if it is dark enough and i have never heard of it doing any such thing as far as trying to hurt some one or any thing else and the light is from a guy going to meet the train because his finacee is on the train and some one kills him or at least that is what i have heard i have also heard where it was a train conductor who had his head chopped off my the train and he is looking for it.so i would say it could be either one maybe he is looking for his head or maybe he is looking for his finacee. |

I am a student studying at ECU. I heard about this ghost from some locals and this past weekend I made the trip out to the dirt road just outside of Pactolus We went to the spot where the railroads tracks once ran and parked the car. This was down a dirt road and nothing around but trees and fields. We shut the engine off the lights and then we flashed our beams three times. It took several seconds, maybe a minute or so and then there appeared a glow, a light of some sort about ten feet off the ground. It was there briefly and gone and it floated across in front of us, could not tell how far very very irie shine, not real big but not a artificial light. the story is a man rode his horse out to Pactolus from here in Greenville to meet his fiance who was coming from Richmond but the train never showed and once it got dark the man was stuck by the tracks not wanting to risk the trip in the night, he was brutaly attacked that night by men trying to get his horse, the body was never recovered but his horse showed up back in Greenville three days later. he haunts the area because he wants his fiance to now he was there waiting. i never believed this until the night i saw it with my own eyes. he is out there |

I have seen this light as well. I am from Norfolk, Va..about an hour away. I have been 4 times and seen the light 3 of those. It has changed colors, chased is, gotten brighter with profanity and disappeared and reappeared on the other side of us...blocking us in at one point. If anyone would like to carry an intelligent conversation about this I would be happy to. I have researched this many times and always like telling the "details". Eric |
| Date: 1/14/2001 8:29:00 PM I have also been and seen the Light. I have been alot actually. and i have only been let down a couple of times. Usually a group of us go out between 11 and 1 o'clock at night and see if we can see anything. we have taken video equipment and caught it on film successfully. Like Eric the first time that we went it appeared in between us and our cars, trapping us down in the path. I don't think it meant us harm though. When we all were down there we asked a man that was at a small auction house just next to the path (where the tracks used to be) what he had heard that happened. and he said that a man was cheating on his wife and she found out and cut his head off and buried it near the tracks. now he is looking for his head. not saying this is true or not but it is yet another theory.
