On the Saturday night closest to Halloween in 1971, I was waiting for a neice who was to stop by for trick or treating. I waited on the screened in porch of our tiny home just east of Callahan, Florida on Highway A-1-A. It had just gotten dark and turning cool as I waited, when something caught my eye, coming almost directly towards me from the east. The object seemed to be moving at a high rate of speed. I was familiar with various types of aircraft as my husband had just got out of the Marine's as an aviation electronic specialist, so my interest was taken by this fast moving object. As it came closer, I realized that it was like nothing that I had ever seen. The object came to a sudden halt about 150 yards from our home, and across a field, directly over my mother-in-laws' home. I called my husband out on to the porch as it came to a stop. The object seemed to be slightly larger than her 1200 square foot home, and hung in the air just above her roof top. I! t was triangular shaped with a round dome over the middle section. The dome was encircled at the base by small round 'portholes' with various colored lights shining from each porthole. The dome seemed to spin while the triangular body of the aircraft was stationary. My husband and I were totally transfixed. Every hair on our bodies stood up, almost as if electrically charged. It seemed we could not even speak, we could only stand and watch. Just moments after it stopped, every light in my mother-in-laws home went out, it was completely dark. It stayed over her house for no more than 2 to 3 minutes, then moved straight up and suddenly shot off toward the west at an incredible rate of speed. It had disappeared in only seconds. We stood on our porch speechless for a very long time. Finally, my husband looked it me and I said, 'Who could we tell? They would think we are crazy!' I told only a few close friends this story, and later my children whenever the subject of Aliens or UFO's came up. But I watched the paper, waiting to see if there were any other reports or explainations of what I had seen. A few days later, the Florida Times Union, published in Jacksonville, had a short item in their 'Call Box' section. A reader in west Jacksonville described seeing exactly what I had seen. The Times Union had contacted the Naval Air Stations in the area who offered no explaintion. This certainly did not help to set my mind at rest, but let me know that this was not a delusion. My husband and I did not offer any information to my mother in law when she complained about her temporary power outage. We felt that she would not believe us, and we did not want to upset her if she did believe. The power of that brief experience has never left me. I knew, that what we had seen was not of this time and place. The surety of this came right away. I still watch the skys with a certainty, there is some else out there. How it changed my life:I believe that there are many people that will do anything for media attention or money, but that one sighting convenced me of the reality of unidentified flying Objects. I don't know if they come from our future, another solar system, or a different dimention, but I know that this is a real experience for myself and many others. I am not obsessed with this subject, but over the years I have read a few books, and take the time to watch intelligently reported television about the subject. I now believe that whoever these beings are, that they have been watching and maybe even interacting with us for many centuries. It colors my opinions of ancient history right up to everyday occurances. This was a profound experience that has shaped my vision of the universe and left me open minded about the experiences of others.
