My mother, Betty Sue Hampton, met my father in Little Rock, Arkansas while she was living with her sister, Louise Hampton or Louise Smith, while taking a business course. This would have been in 1951~52. After becoming pregnant, my mother who was 21 years old years old moved back in with her parents in El Dorado, Ar. My mother told me that she received a phone call before I was born from a co-worker of my father's stating that he died of a stroke while doing construction work in Hawaii. My mother said she had never met any of his family. I accepted the story and from time to time would ask her for the details. She never gave me any additional information. Last week my mother passed from this life, and my husband asked some of my relatives about my father. It seems that this subject was considered tabu and was never discussed among family members. Two of my aunts told me that they had never been told the story that my father had died. I was born in El Dorado, Ar. on 4-10-53 at Warner Brown Hospital. My original birth certificate lists Betty Sue Davis as my mother. My father was listed as Nelson Ronald Davis as deceased and that he was born in Alabama. Several of my relatives had met him and told me he was around 5'10 to 6 feet tall with reddish hair and a fair complection. They think at the time in 1952 he was from Redfield, AR. It is a small community about 40 miles from Little Rock. My relatives believe he may have worked for a bus line or station. So far, we have been unable to locate a marriage license in Arkansas. My aunt told me that my father kept calling my mother, but she did not know if this was before or after I was born. She stated that her husband, who is deceased, payed him a visit in Redfield and told him to leave my mother alone. All of my mother's family thought I had the facts, and now they are sorry that they did not speak up before so many years have passed. My aunts and uncles are all in their 70's and 80's and their memories are not what they used to be. I did not pursue this while my mother my living since the whole situation seems to upset her so badly. I hope that I can find someone that can help me.
